The Charity Youths Organization, a local philanthropic group in the Arakan State capital Sittwe, will provide food assistance to 200 families who are facing livelihood hardships during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ko Htoo Htoo, the executive director of the charitable group, told DMG that the assistance would be provided due to people’s livelihood difficulties during the ongoing third wave of Covid-19 infections.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, people have not been allowed to go out. We support those who are in trouble at this time. These people are provided with our funds,” he added.
Food supplies will mainly be distributed to the grassroots and odd-job workers in some wards in Sittwe, he said.
“We will donate more to the areas where there are a lot of the grassroots. We will donate rice, oil and eggs at the rate of K20,000 per household. We want to donate a lot, but we can’t afford to,” he explained.
The Charity Youths Organization says the scope of its donations will depend on donors’ support, with efforts targeting those in need in Sittwe and other Arakan State townships.
U Zaw Zaw Tun, general secretary of the Rakhine Ethnics Congress (REC), said the young philanthropists’ donation drive for those in need was encouraging.
“I warmly welcome donations to those in need at this difficult time. But when it comes to giving, I hope they will give it to people who really need it,” he said.
The United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULAL/AA) first announced a stay-at-home period in Arakan State from July 20 to August 4, and subsequently extended it from August 5 to August 18.
