Myanmar’s military regime has reportedly issued arrest warrants for 20 local men from Maungdaw, Arakan State, on suspicion of providing food and funds to the Arakan Army (AA).
Among the accused are local businessmen, lawyers, ward and village administrators and reporters.
“Among the accused are some people who were included on the junta’s [previously existing] wanted list. Some people’s addresses are wrong,” said a local man in Maungdaw.
The accused have reportedly gone into hiding.
In March, the regime reportedly issued an arrest warrant for Dr. Nu Kathi San, medical superintendent of Maungdaw District Hospital, and Dr. Aung Naing Lin, a physician from the same hospital.
The regime issued an arrest warrant for 13 locals including a ward administrator and a lawyer in Maungdaw on November 13 on suspicion of having connections with the AA. The accused have reportedly gone into hiding since then.
“The regime, which is defeated militarily, arrests civilians arbitrarily and issues arrest warrants on suspicion of having illegal ties to the AA. These are the regime’s tricks. The regime wants to oppress Arakanese people due to military defeat in Maungdaw,” said a politician.
The AA has seized several junta bases, military camps and BGF outposts in Maungdaw. It has also stepped up attacks on Border Guard Police Battalion Nos. 2 and 5 and the Nar Khaung To camp.
The junta arrested 425 civilians in Arakan State in the six months from November 13 to May 13, the United League of Arakan/Arakkha Army (ULA/AaA) said in a press release on May 28.
