The Chiang Rai Police announced on May 4 that 30 Myanmar nationals holding temporary border pass (TBP) were arrested for crossing the designated area in Thailand’s Chiang Rai Province.
The Thai police checked two black cars and arrested 30 Myanmar nationals near Chiang Rai College, about 60 kilometres from the Chiang Rai border, on May 3. Most of those arrested were temporary border pass holders.
The arrestees are from Myanmar’s Shan State and they range in age from five to 45, the Chiang Rai police said in the statement.
The arrestees are being questioned at Muang Chiang Rai police station and a case has been opened against two drivers for transporting foreigners illegally.
After the military coup in Myanmar, there are people who have illegally crossed the border to enter neighbouring Thailand for various reasons, and there are also people who have entered through illegal routes to find work.
The Thai authorities arrested about 130 Myanmar nationals who illegally entered Thailand’s Kanchanaburi Province and Chiang Rai Province, on May 1 and 2, and are preparing to take action against detained Myanmar nationals for illegal border crossings, according to labour activists.
