There has been growing concern among residents after an explosion occurred near an old hospital east of Nandawyargon Field in Arakan State’s Mrauk-U at about 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
Some shop owners who sell fish, vegetables and rice shuttered their businesses after the blast, said a vendor from Nandawyargon ward.
“We heard a loud explosion. All shopkeepers closed their shops in fear. How can we make a living if Mrauk-U is not stable?” she added.
Some junta soldiers arrived at the scene of the blast after the explosion, according to a resident of Mrauk-U.
“I heard a loud explosion at around 10 a.m. I don’t know exactly what kind of explosive device it was,” the resident said. “I saw a hole that was about one foot in circumference at the scene of the explosion. All hawkers reportedly fled to safer locations after the blast and some shops were closed. Residents live in fear and are worried about their safety.”
Shop owners at Mrauk-U’s central Myoma Market packed up their merchandise and moved to their homes after the township General Administration Department ordered them to close their shops on Monday, saying there were mines to be cleared at the market.
The explosion took place more than one furlong away from the Mrauk-U Myoma Market.
Junta soldiers were stationed in residential areas such as Konthelton, Kanhla and Taungyat wards, and near the town’s Myoma Market, on Tuesday.
