Sittwe municipality warns against herding livestock on roads

The Sittwe Township Development Committee has threatened domestic animal owners with legal action if they do not take proper care of their animals.
The warning came after a car almost skidded out of control on the Mayu highway as the driver swerved to avoid a string of horses that were trotting on the road.
A municipal official said town residents can file complaints with the municipality if they see animals being herded on roads.
“Not only pigs and cows but horses are also herded on the roads now. It is quite dangerous for road users, and we will therefore impose a fine on those who fail to tend to their cattle properly,” said the official.
Ko Nyi Khaing Thwee from Sittwe agreed that herding livestock in public areas was unacceptable.
“Sometimes, we have to wait because cows are walking on the road. But people are having financial difficulties these days, and the municipality should issue warnings first, and only impose fines later,” he told DMG.
Other town residents have also welcomed the municipality’s move to restrict farm animals on local roads, citing the risk of traffic accidents.
