One of the eight injured detainees from Kyauktan village, Rathedaung Township, died on 6 July night at about 8 p.m. while he was receiving medical treatment at Rathedaung hospital, according to family members.

Ko Maung Zaw Lin, 30, was injured when the Tatmadaw fired guns as villagers were rioting in detention.

“A bullet struck his arm. He became ill because of the injury and was sent to Rathedaung Hospital. He had lost a lot of blood and had to be given a transfusion, unfortunately he vomited up blood and died,” his wife Ma Khaing Soe Win said.

She wanted to hold his funeral at her village cemetery, but she does not have people to carry him and cannot afford to bring him back home. So, she has arranged to hold his funeral at a cemetery in Rathedaung town on 8 July, she said.

“We earn a meagre income and live hand to mouth.  I have a daughter and I don’t know how I can live without him. I can’t afford to take his corpse to my village,” she said.

While the Tatmadaw was conducting inquiries by detaining 275 men from Kyauktan village at the village school since 30 April, a gunfire broke out on 2 May at night.

During the gunfire, six detainees were killed and eight others were injured. Among the injured villagers, two man died undergoing medical treatment. One man died in Yangon hospital and another man died in Rathedaung hospital.
