The Arakkha Army (AA) has reportedly seized two more Border Guard Force (BGF) battalions in southern Maungdaw Township, Arakan State.

The AA took control of the military’s BGF Battalion No. 9 in Myinlut Village and BGF battalion No. 6 in Inndin Village in pre-dawn attacks on June 6, according to reliable sources.

“The AA seized the military’s BGF Battalion No. 9 in Myinlut Village, driving junta soldiers out of the village. The AA is currently conducting a clearance operation in the area. The AA has already taken control of BGF Battalion No. 6 in Inndin Village,” said one source.

The junta soldiers fled to BGF Battalion No. 4 in Mawrawaddy Village, he added.

The AA reportedly seized two BGF outposts near Kyaukpandu Village in Maungdaw Township on June 2.

The regime conducted airstrikes, and junta troops in Sittwe and Maungdaw fired artillery shells on AA positions during the fighting.

“The AA seized the military’s BGF battalions in a few hours. The fighting between the military and AA is escalating in Maungdaw,” the source said.

Hostilities between the military and AA are intensifying at a location between Shwetaung and Sabeigon villages in Maungdaw Township, according to locals.

Hundreds of local people have been trapped in downtown Maungdaw and some of them are being used by the regime as hostages, another source said.

“The military and Muslim armed men held some local people as hostages. We don’t know exactly the number of arrestees. The AA also has difficulty entering Maungdaw, so it is difficult to know the situation in the border town in detail,” the source added.

The AA has seized several junta bases, military camps and BGF outposts in Maungdaw. It has also stepped up attacks on Border Guard Police Battalion Nos. 2, 4, and 5.

Approximately 300 regime snipers and about 4,000 junta soldiers and military-trained armed Muslim men have taken positions at residential buildings in downtown Maungdaw, according to residents.
