A dead man wrapped in a burlap sack was discovered in Myolel Creek in Sittwe’s Rupa Mrauk ward at around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, according to local charity Metta Yaung Chi Foundation.
The deceased’s identity is still unknown, said Ko Lin Lin, chairman of Metta Yaung Chi Foundation.
“Our guess is he died some four days ago. It seems that he was killed, and his body was put inside a fertiliser sack and dumped into the creek,” he said. The body was sent to the mortuary in Sittwe Hospital, he added.
Local residents in Sittwe, the administrative seat of Arakan State, are concerned about their safety following a rise in crimes from theft and mugging to murder.
“We have heard about more homicides and discovery of dead bodies lately, besides the crimes of theft and mugging. It is horrifying that the man was killed and dumped in a fertiliser sack,” said Daw Aye Nu Chay from Setyonesu Ward.
Locals and civil society organisations in Sittwe have blamed lawlessness for a significant increase in crimes, and have called on the Arakan State military council to take effective actions to prevent criminality.
