Building materials worth more than K6 million were reportedly stolen from the Yan Pyay Man Pyay Pagoda under construction at the BXT port in the Arakan State capital Sittwe.

Among the stolen construction materials were several steel pipes and some machinery, said U San Mya, a member of the Yan Pyay Man Pyay Pagoda’s Board of Trustees.

“Construction materials worth K6 million were stolen within two days in a row,” he told DMG, adding that the items were stolen sometime on April 20 and 21.

A case has been filed with police in Sittwe, but no suspect has yet been arrested.

U Maung Thar Sein, a Sittwe resident, said the perpetrators of this week’s heist at the pagoda should be swiftly identified and prosecuted, adding that broader perceptions of security in the Arakan State capital would be impacted one way or another.

Construction of the Yan Pyay Man Pyay Pagoda began in March 2020 at an estimated cost of about K2.5 billion. The pagoda stands 72 feet high.

Following the theft, a security guard has been assigned to the Yan Pyay Man Pyay Pagoda, according to its Board of Trustees.
