A woman from an area 4 miles from Maungdaw town tested positive for Covid-19 on June 24, according to the Maungdaw District Hospital.

“It is true. She came to the hospital this morning as she had lost her sense of smell and tested positive for Covid-19. Seven people who had close contact with her have been instructed to stay at their homes,” Dr. Nu Kaythi San, the district hospital’s superintendent, told DMG.

There have been at least seven Covid-19 patients in Maungdaw town over recent weeks, two of whom have recovered from the disease and were discharged from the hospital. Among the positive cases were two illegal entrants from Bangladesh and three staff from the Maungdaw District General Administration Department.

Meanwhile, one positive case in Sittwe and two positive cases in Taungup were detected on June 23.

Because the situation could lead to community transmission of the virus, Dr. Nu Kaythi San has urged people from Maungdaw and other regions to abide by the directives of the Ministry of Health and Sports.

The number of positive cases in Arakan State has climbed to 87 since May, according to the Arakan State Public Health Department.
