The court hearing to decide on an appeal at the Rakhine State High Court slated for April 30 was adjourned on Tuesday.
U Kyaw Nyunt Maung, the lawyer for Dr Aye Maung, said that legal officials did not say why they put the court hearing off and he was not aware of the date of the new court hearing.
“They just said the court hearing is postponed without providing a reason. They have a responsibility to explain to us why they postponed the court hearing,” he said.
The prominent politician Dr Aye Maung was sentenced to 20-years imprisonment by the Sittwe district court on March 19 for incitement and high treason.
Dr Aye Maung was not satisfied the verdict and submitted an appeal to the Rakhine State High Court on March 28.
The postponement was reportedly made because submissions were presented on different days.
“I informally heard that the court hearing is adjourned because the dates the appeals were submitted were not the same. But the court did not give any official reason,” U Kyaw Nyunt Maung said.
Dr Aye Maung and author Wai Hun Aung were punished for giving talks at a public event held in Rathedaung Town to mark the fall of Rakhine Kingdom to the Konbaung dynasty in 1784.
Currently they were transferred to Insein prison.
