One of two men who allegedly robbed a gold shop using a fake gun in Gutar Ward of Arakan State’s Taungup Township has been arrested, according to police.
Wearing masks and helmets, the alleged perpetrators robbed the Shwe Pwint Eaint gold shop on the Taungup-Pandaung road at around 2 p.m. on Thursday, holding up the store with a fake gun.
“One of them was arrested at around 9:30 p.m. along with 21 ticals of gold and a motorbike. He was arrested in a farmhouse in the east of Lamu Village. He is currently being detained at the Lamu police station,” a police officer in Taungup Township told DMG.
The 32-year-old detainee is a native of Kangyihtaung in Myebon Township, and was reportedly living in Naypyitaw before the robbery. Police are still searching for his 20-year-old alleged accomplice.
“They came by motorbike. A sales assistant at the gold shop attempted to grab back the gold. Then they took out the [fake] gun and pointed it at her,” said Taungup resident Ko Okkar.
The pair of robbers drove off after people nearby began throwing stones at them.
A robbery also took place at a gold shop in Mrauk-U Township on April 7, with suspects yet to be arrested in that case.
