An illegal fishing boat sailing from Yangon to Bangladesh was intercepted by the Myanmar navy on August 20, with its crew subsequently detained in Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township.
“An illegal fishing boat that came from Yangon was arrested near the Kanyin Chaung economic zone at about 10 a.m,” said U Aung Myint Thein, chair of Maungdaw town’s Traders Association.
According to the police record, there were 21 fishermen and 35 tonnes of fish on board the boat, and security forces interdicted the boat as it was heading toward Bangladesh to sell fish.
The boat was rerouted and allowed to dock at the Kanyin Chaung jetty, said U Aung Myint Thein.
“They have been arrested by navy forces and [authorities] will carry out [legal action] in line with the Sea Customs Act. The boat was allowed to dock at Kanyin Chaung jetty,” he said.
Although DMG phoned Maungdaw Township administrator U Kan Tun Aung seeking comment on the boat incident, he could not be reached.
The Arakan State military council has temporarily closed the Sittwe and Maungdaw border trade centres as part of efforts to control the spread of Covid-19 during the virus’s ongoing third wave in Myanmar.
