Arakan has low number of rape cases

Arakan State has the second lowest number of reported rape cases among all states and regions, the Rakhine Women’s Committee said on Myanmar Women’s Day, which fell on July 3.
Even though Arakan State has among the lowest number of rape cases, when incidents of a sexual nature occur people sometimes have no idea where to file complaints, said Daw Yin Yin Pyone, Staff Officer of Department of Social Welfare, Arakan State.
She said that in 2018 the Rakhine Women’s Committee received up to 35 child rape complaints and one complaint under the Monogamy Law.
The Rakhine Women’s Committee said that the police force, health and social welfare departments, women’s organizations and CSOs are cooperating together to give provide education about sexual violence to the public.
Daw Yin Yin Pyone said that Rakhine Women’s Committee was helping victims of sex crimes pursue legal action, and providing them with education and support.
The Rakhine Women’s Committee plans to launch an education campaign in December to inform women about how to protect themselves from sexual violence, and what steps they should take if they are attacked, she said.
This year’s Myanmar Women’s Day was celebrated in Sittwe and education pamphlets were distributed.
