Villagers found the body of an unidentified man at a garbage dump near Mansi Village, part of Arakan State’s Sittwe Township, on October 11.
A local man from Mansi Village, who did not want to be named, said he smelled a foul odour near the garbage dump and found a dead body with the deceased’s hands and legs bound with rope.
“He didn’t have any [visible] injuries, but his body was already swollen. This body is not a Muslim body. Muslim men do not tattoo. The body is tattooed,” the unnamed villager added.
The body was sent to Sittwe Hospital.
U Than Shwe, chairman of a local funeral service in Sittwe, said the deceased man was about 35 years old and it is not known where he was from.
“The body has not yet been buried as the police are examining the body. As his relatives have not arrived yet, it is difficult to say who the deceased is,” he added.
Officials from Sittwe’s Myoma police station could not be reached for comment regarding the matter.
“A person from another religion was killed and dumped in a garbage dump near a Muslim village, causing local concern. We are worried about inter-communal conflict,” said another local man from Mansi Village.
An unidentified dead body wrapped in a plastic bag was found alongside Myolae Creek in Sittwe’s Yupamrauk Ward on August 8.
