Arakan State in heart of matriculation exam season
The matriculation examination for the 2022-23 academic year is being held from March 8-18 across the country, and a total of 16,451 students sat for the exam in Arakan State for subjects including biology and economics, according to the Arakan State Education Department.

The matriculation examination for the 2022-23 academic year is being held from March 8-18 across the country, and a total of 16,451 students sat for the exam in Arakan State for subjects including biology and economics, according to the Arakan State Education Department.
Students took Myanmar, English and Mathematics exams on March 8, 9 and 10, before sitting for Chemistry and Physics on March 13 and 14, and Biology and Economics on March 15.
Students can choose from sciences or arts curricula. Sciences curricula include Myanmar, English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Economics.
A total of 18,885 students registered to take the exam for sciences curricula in Arakan State, of whom 16,451 students took the exam, according to the head of the Arakan State education department, U Ba Htwee Sein.
A total of 2,214 students registered for the sciences curricula with biology, and a total of 323 students did not show up.
A total of 16,671 students registered for the sciences curricula with biology, and a total of 2,111 students did not show up.
The matriculation examination is being held at 70 exam centres in towns across Arakan State. Geography, History and Optional Myanmar exams will be on March 16, 17 and 18 respectively.
Most students reportedly did not do well in Mathematics in Arakan State.
Ma May Tin Htay, who sat the exam at No. 2 Basic Education High School in Sittwe, said: “I am not very satisfied with my performance in the Mathematics exam. But I think I may get good grades in Economics.”
This year is the final matriculation exam under the old format and curricula. Starting the coming year, students will have to learn under a new testing regime.
“Students will have difficulties learning the new curricula if they fail the exam this year. Parents will also have financial difficulties to fund their children for one more year. Mathematics was a little difficult,” said student Ma Myo Nandar.
Daw Hla Win Oo, the mother of a matriculation student from Mingan Ward in Sittwe, said: “My son was not very satisfied with his performance at the exam. Some children cried when they left the exam centres after the Mathematics exam. We want children to pass the exam this year. They might not be interested in [the new curricula].”
A total of 19,290 students registered for matriculation exams for the 2022-23 academic year in Arakan State, according to the state education department.
