Sein Ta Lone mango growers in Mandalay Region are getting good prices for their fruits due to high demand from foreign countries.
The price of Sein Ta Lone mangoes rose from K800,000 per tonne last year to K1.2 million per tonne this year.
“We ship Sein Ta Lone mangoes to Muse, a town on the Myanmar-China border. Farmers are reluctant to sell Sein Ta Lone mangoes at lower prices as the seasonal fruits are scarce now,” said U Htay Aung, manager of Thazin Nwe mango farm in Palaik town, Mandalay Region.
Myanmar’s Sein Ta Lone mangoes, prized for their flavour and fragrance, are being bought from countries ranging from Singapore and China to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Germany and South Korea.
Myanmar shipped about 50 tonnes of Sein Ta Lone mangoes to Singapore last year and is expected to increase its Sein Ta Lone mango exports this year, said U Kyin Htay, an official from the Kyaukse District Department of Consumer Affairs.
“We have begun exporting Sein Ta Lone mangoes to Singapore since May. We have already exported about 40 tonnes of Sein Ta Lone mangoes to Singapore. We expect to export around 100 tonnes of Sein Ta Lone mangoes this year,” he said.
Sein Ta Lone mangoes, said to be the best variety available in Myanmar, are mainly produced in Mandalay Region, Katha and Htigyaing townships in Sagaing Region, and Yatsauk and Pindaya in Shan State.
