The May Yu shopping complex in Bawlonekwin ward of the Arakan State capital Sittwe will open next month, according to developers.

The shopping mall was scheduled to open its doors in July but the opening was delayed by Cyclone Mocha, which made landfall over Arakan State in mid-May.

Ninety percent of the buildings damaged in the storm have been repaired, said managing-director U Tin Aung Oo of Western Shining Stars Construction Co, the developer of the shopping centre.

“We plan to initially open around two floors after Thadingyut [in late October]. The movie theatres are around 90 percent complete,” he said.

Construction of the shopping centre started in 2018 and was initially scheduled for completion in 2021. But construction was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, and post-coup turmoil that began in February 2021.

“We had difficulties repairing the building after the storm. We had to order certain parts from abroad. The separate power line for the shopping complex was also badly damaged,” he said.

The shopping mall will include a cinema, playground and shops selling a wide variety of products including gold jewellery, coffee and foods.

“It will be the first of its kind in Sittwe. It is good for us as it will create jobs for young people, and we can eat and buy many things in one place. It can be a good hangout for young people,” said Sittwe resident Ma Tin Htay.

The shopping complex is being jointly developed by Western Shining Stars Construction Co and Golden Green Co.
