Action is being taken against the perpetrators in the murder of a young woman who was stabbed to death last month near the government offices in Sittwe, Arakan State, said U Khaing Thukha, spokesperson for the Arakan Army, at an online press conference on Monday.

Ma Nwe Thandar Win, 18, was found dead on August 15 with two stab wounds and bruises on her face and chin, in a shop where she worked near the state government offices in the Arakan State capital Sittwe. The Arakan Army said in a statement on August 31 that it interrogated some suspects in the murder of a young woman in Sittwe and had identified the perpetrator.

“We arrested some suspects in the murder of Ma Nwe Thandar Win and are questioning them. We have already identified the person as a suspect in the case, and are conducting further investigation to build a strong case and bring the case to court in a timely manner,” he said.

The ULA/AA spokesman has yet to reveal the identity of the person arrested on suspicion of being the culprit in the murder.

The ULA announced on August 31 that it had identified the murder culprit, and that he had confessed to killing the woman. The organisation, however, did not reveal the identity of the alleged murderer.

“The evidence will be collected in an orderly and correct manner, and [the investigation] will be carried out strictly in accordance with the court procedure. I would like to answer that we will take specific and decisive action to punish the perpetrator,” U Khaing Thukha said.

Maung Myo Chit Soe, 19, from a neighbouring shop, was detained by the junta’s police force on August 16 for interrogation, and was subsequently charged with murder.

Family members of the victim have expressed doubts about there being only one perpetrator involved in the homicide.
