The Arakan Army (AA) has identified the culprit in the murder of an assistant teacher from Arakan State’s Rathedaung Township, AA spokesperson U Khaing Thukha said on October 13.
Daw Hnin Yu Nwe, a 37-year-old female junior assistant teacher from Kyunpaw Pauktaw Village in Rathedaung Township, is believed to have been killed while on her way to Panphawpyin Village from Pauktaw Village on the morning of September 16.
One of two suspects being investigated is Ko Maung Maung Aye from Kyunpaw Pauktaw Village. Ko Maung Maung Aye confessed to killing the teacher, U Khaing Thukha said.
“Ko Maung Maung Aye has demonstrated and admitted how he killed the female teacher. However, as there are still other, related matters to be investigated in this case, more details will be released in the coming days,” he added.
Ko Maung Maung Aye escaped Arakan Army/United League of Arakan (AA/ULA) custody on the night of September 19 when AA/ULA personnel were taking him in for interrogation, but he was recaptured on September 26.
The Arakan Army has not yet disclosed what action will be taken against Ko Maung Maung Aye.
Family members of Daw Hnin Yu Nwe said that if the Arakan Army can identify the real perpetrator, the ethnic armed group should punish the perpetrator in accordance with the law.
“We want the Arakan Army to take appropriate action against the perpetrator. We also want the Arakan Army to openly identify that the suspect is the real perpetrator,” said Daw Hmne Ni, a family member of Daw Hnin Yu Nwe.
A rattled education community in Arakan State has also called for a hardline against the perpetrator or perpetrators as a deterrent.
“I want the real perpetrators to be punished effectively. In order to prevent such cases from happening, the concerned parties need to control them effectively. These issues are not acceptable in any way,” said a senior assistant teacher in Rathedaung Township.
