A 28-year-old paralyzed woman in Ngayichaing Village, part of Arakan State’s Pauktaw Township, was raped on Saturday night.
The alleged perpetrator has been identified as U Nyunt Tin Maung, 35.
“At around 8 p.m. on October 14, while she was closing the door to sleep, the perpetrator came and gagged her and raped her. When a neighbour called out to the victim and nothing was heard, he opened the door and found the perpetrator,” said a family member of the victim.
The alleged perpetrator is a resident from Phadu Alae Village in Pauktaw Township. He is a married man and works as a fisherman with his brother in Ngayichaing Village.
“This is a case of drunkenness. He [the alleged perpetrator] drinks alcohol and swears at others. He has been arrested by the United League of Arakan,” said a community elder in Ngayichaing Village.
The alleged perpetrator was arrested by local ULA/AA officials at around 5 p.m. on October 15.
Family members of the victim have been summoned to visit the ULA regional office, but the family members said they are facing financial difficulties.
The victim has been suffering from chest pain since the incident, and the family members want effective punishment for the rape of such a vulnerable woman.
Since September, there have been multiple cases of child rape in Arakan State. Women’s rights activists say that especially harsh and effective punishments should be imposed on those who rape young girls and other particularly vulnerable groups.
“Due to the lack of law enforcement and effective measures against crime under criminal law, it can be considered that such sexual violence is repeated,” said Daw Saw San Nyein Thu, chairwoman of the Rakhaing Women’s Initiative Organization.
A 3-year-old girl in Thayetchaung Village, Pauktaw Township, was raped on October 6 and the alleged perpetrator has been arrested by the ULA/AA, according to family members of the victim.
