Basic education schools in Arakan State are ready to reopen on June 1, according to the Arakan State Education Officer’s office.
Regarding the reopening of schools in Arakan State, a meeting was held with members of the Arakan State Administration Council at the Arakan State Education Officer’s office on May 21.
At the meeting, discussions were had between members of the Arakan State Administration Council, Arakan State Education Officer, District Education Officer and Township Education Officers, said Deputy Director Dr. Tun Tun Thein.
“The meeting was held between the Arakan State Administration Council and Education Officers from Arakan State’s district and township levels to discuss the preparations to reopen schools on June 1,” he said.
Dr. Tun Tun Thein said the department is ready to open up to 3,196 schools out of 3,309 basic education schools in Arakan State.
Schools closed since the 2012 conflict, schools with difficult transportation situations and schools with security concerns will be unable to reopen this year.
Education Officers said they will carry out COVID-19 preventive measures at schools and report to the Arakan State Administration Council.
Because there are not enough teachers in Arakan State, science teachers also teach history, according to the office of the Arakan State Education Officer.
Dr. Tun Tun Thein did not say how many teachers are needed in Arakan State.
Although many teachers are participating in the civil disobedience movement throughout Myanmar, there are reportedly only six striking teachers in Arakan State; four from Taungup Township and two from Gwa Township.
