Police are still searching for the gunman who killed their colleague near Sittwe Hospital in the Arakan State capital on Thursday evening, said a police officer from the Arakan State Police Force.

“We are doing police work, and opened a murder case,” the officer told DMG.

Police Sub-Lieutenant Thiekpan, 42, from the central police station, was shot point-blank in his head, at a traffic light intersection near Sittwe Hospital at around 6 p.m on Thursday. His wife and his 6-year-old daughter were together with him on his motorcycle at the time of the attack. The two were not injured, according to residents.

“We heard three gunshots. He was shot by unknown riders side by side at the traffic lights. It was a little bit dark there, and people ran out of fear after the shooting,” said a resident.

The police sub-lieutenant died on the way to the hospital. “He had two gunshots below his right ear. He was shot from close range at the traffic lights,” said another resident who helped send the policeman to the hospital.

The slain policeman is the main inspector in the murder case of Ma Nwe Thandar Win, who was murder at a shop near the Arakan State government offices in Sittwe on August 15, according to police.

“He was tasked with handling the murder case of Ma Nwe Thandar Win,” a police officer from the Arakan State Police Force told DMG.
