U Myint Naing, member of Amyotha Hluttaw from Arakan State constituency 5, raised a question during a Hluttaw meeting on September 19, whether more teachers will be appointed for the 2019 – 20 academic school year, as the primary schools in Kyauktaw township, Arakan State don’t have enough teachers.

Kyauktaw has 259 primary schools in its whole township, and it requires 1,099 teachers to cover all schools. But schools are running with 760 teachers at the moment.

“We have 73 students at Shin Thay Pyin primary school. We only have one principle with no other teacher at all. So the villagers hire the teachers with their own funds but they cannot afford to pay for that now,” U Myint Naing said.

Similarly, other schools in Kyaung Pho village, Tae Wa village, Sat Kyut Chaung village, Kalar Chaung village, Aung Lan Chaung village and Pin Zyine village also don’t have the government appointed teachers at all.

U Myint Naing urged that the department of Education should fill the number of teacher requirements as soon as possible so that children can have a good education starting at the basic level.

U Win Maw Tun, deputy minister of Education, said that the schools mentioned by U Myint Naing were run by the teachers hired by the villages.

“We will arrange to appoint teachers for primary schools after discussing with Arakan State government,” he said.

84 villages are situated in Kyauktaw Township together with 259 schools. There are 10 high schools, 22 (Branch) high schools, 15 middle schools, 26 (Branch) middle schools, 34 primary schools (has some middle school level students), 116 primary schools and 36 (Branch) primary schools. There are also eight monastic schools and six private schools.
