A 9-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her sister’s husband in Chaung Thone Khwa village, Taungup Township, on July 8, according to a Taungup police official.
The alleged rapist has been identified as 23-year-old Ko Htet Lin Zaw aka Nyi Chay. He is said to have arrived in Chaung Thone Khwa village on the evening of July 8 and told his mother-in-law that his wife had sent him to pick up his pre-teen sister-in-law.
He then raped the girl somewhere along the road between Thetkelpyin and Ywapaka villages, said Khin Maung San, a police inspector at the Taungup Township police station.
“He took the young girl and returned her to his mother-in-law at around 10 p.m. The girl was examined and found to have been raped. The girl confessed that she was raped by her sister’s husband,” the police officer said.
Ko Htet Lin Zaw has been arrested and charged under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which covers rape.
The alleged rapist lives in Taungup Township’s Abay village.
Though not common, rapes of minors are occasionally reported in Arakan State, including one case last month involving a 6-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by a 14-year-old boy.
