The Myanmar military stands accused of killing three people and detaining a total of 37 residents — 24 men and 13 women — from Kadetgyi and Gotinn villages in Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region, and the whereabouts of the detainees remain unknown, according to locals.
“The junta troops stormed two villages at night and arrested 37 villagers. The details of the detainees are unclear and their whereabouts are still unknown,” said a resident of Kadetgyi village.
Locals in Launglon Township said the names and details of the detainees were still being investigated.
Six homes were burned to ashes and three locals were shot dead after junta soldiers raided the two villages on June 26, locals said.
“Regime forces stormed Kadetgyi village, destroying five homes and killing a couple identified as U Thaung Win and Daw Win Aye,” said a member of the Launglong Township people’s administration body. “The junta soldiers also destroyed a home in Gotinn village, shot dead a local in his 50s named U Hsan Win, and looted the valuable things in his home.”
The military junta has not yet commented on allegations that some locals were arrested and shot dead.
Military tensions have grown between the Myanmar military and local anti-regime groups and the Karen National Defence Force (KNDO), a military branch of the Karen National Union (KNU), in Launglon Township since the second week of June, after a 100-strong military contingent entered the area.
