Myanmar’s military regime has detained a local man and woman in Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan State, according to residents.
Junta soldiers abducted U Khin Maung, a 40-year-old mobile phone shop owner, and Daw Khin Sandar Aye, 45, owner of a cosmetics store, from their homes on July 7.
“They live on the outskirts of Kyaukphyu and run their shops in the Kyaukphyu market. They were taken from their homes by junta soldiers on July 7,” said a source close to the arrestees.
The reason for their arrest remains unclear and the pair are still detained. Local speculation has posited that the two were arrested because they were importing items related to their businesses from mainland Myanmar.
“The pair imports mobile phones, electronics, cosmetics and consumer goods from mainland Myanmar. This is the reason why they were arrested,” said a vendor from Kyaukphyu market.
The regime has been making arrests of civilians in Kyaukphyu Township and military tensions between the military and Arakkha Army (AA) are running high amid some clashes between the two sides.
The regime has detained more than 200 people in Kyaukphyu Township since the latest fighting in Arakan State began in November. Of the detainees, over 100 people have been released, but at least 82 are still being held by the regime, according to a DMG tally.
