Five people were reportedly killed in a junta airstrike on Kanseik Village on Pantin Island in the west of Taungup Township, Arakan State, on Tuesday morning.
“The regime carried out an airstrike on the village without any fighting in the area, killing five local people. We are investigating the names of victims. We have difficulties contacting other people as phone line services have been cut off in the area,” said a local resident.
Hundreds of people from Taungup Town and other villages displaced by fighting are taking refuge in Kanseik Village. A junta jet fighter dropped several bombs on the village during two bombing raids on Tuesday morning, killing two women and three men.
“Among the victims are some students who passed the matriculation exam with distinction. Myanmar Navy vessels are currently firing mortar shells onto Pantin Island,” said another Taungup resident.
A junta air assault on some villages near Taungup on June 15 killed a 20-year-old man.
Military tensions are running high in Taungup and thousands of local people were forced to flee following the military’s clash with the Arakkha Army (AA) near Chaungkauk Ward on June 15.
The junta’s No. 5 Military Operations Command, and Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) Nos. 544 and 346, are based in Taungup Township.
Civilian casualties continue to rise daily due to regime airstrikes on residential areas in Arakan State.
