A junta court sentenced the country’s detained former State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to three more years in prison on Friday over alleged fraud in the 2020 general election, bringing her cumulative prison sentences since being arrested in February 2021 to 20 years so far, with more charges still pending.

The regime court had already sentenced the 77-year-old to 17 years on other charges. President U Win Myint and Union Minister U Min Thu of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s ousted National League for Democracy (NLD) government were also sentenced to three years in prison with labour alongside the NLD leader for alleged election fraud under Section 130(a) of the Penal Code, according to a source close to Naypyidaw Prison.

“The case was heard today at the special court inside Naypyidaw Prison. The three were given three years with labour,” said the source. All three are in good health, the source added.

The three defendants will submit an appeal against the ruling, said a lawyer source.

With the latest three-year prison term handed down to him on Friday, U Win Myint is now looking at five years behind bars.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi still faces eight other charges including two counts of corruption for allegedly accepting a bribe in connection with her charity, the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, as well as a case under the Official Secrets Act and five charges of corruption over her rental and purchase of a helicopter for use in overseeing natural disaster response and state affairs.
