Villager charged under Counter-Terrorism Law

A villager who was detained for fishing in an area close to an area where a landmine exploded has been remanded on 13 August.

A villager who was detained for fishing in an area close to an area where a landmine exploded has been remanded on 13 August.

A mine blast occurred on the morning of 11 August at the area between the entrance of Shwe Yin Aye village and a helicopter field. Authorities arrested U Maung Soe Thein, a villager from Shwe Yin Aye village who was fishing near the incident.

“We filed a complaint under section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law and he was remanded today,” said police captain Myo Myo, head of Ma Gyee Chaung police station.

Family members did not know if he would appear in the court to get remand, so they did not get a chance to see him.

“I was not told we can meet him,” said Daw Wah Wah Win, wife of U Maung Soe Thein.

Two mines exploded near Kaing Gyi village , south of Maungdaw Township, on 21 April, Maung Kyaw Thein, 24, from Mawrawady village was arrested and charged under section 50(a) and (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.
