An additional 20 cases of Covid-19 were reported in Maungdaw Township on July 3, with one infected individual dying due to underlying illness, according to Maungdaw District General Hospital.
The 20 cases included 14 Border Guard Police personnel and their families, as well as two education staff, three immigration officers and a resident of Myoma Taung ward.
“One Covid-19 patient died and he was suffering from diabetes and hypertension,” said Dr. Nu Kaythi San, superintendent of Maungdaw District General Hospital.
The fatality was identified as a 60-year-old man from Myoma Taung ward, who was admitted to the hospital on July 2 after falling ill. He tested positive for Covid-19 on July 3 and died the same day. His house has been placed on lockdown.
A high school teacher and a primary school teacher from Maungdaw town also tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday, according to U Kyar Sein Aung, the education officer for Maungdaw Township.
He said he submitted a recommendation to authorities to temporarily close Maungdaw’s No. 2 Basic Education High School, citing the possibility that the infected high school teacher may have had several close contacts with students and staff at the school.
A total of 174 cases of Covid-19 were recorded in Maungdaw Township as of July 3. Seven of those patients have been discharged from hospital.
The number of Covid-19 cases in Arakan State rose to 348 on July 2. A 35-year-old diabetic woman in Sittwe became the first state fatality of the virus’s third wave on June 28, with the 60-year-old man in Maungdaw becoming the second on Saturday.
