Two of six prisoners who were being transferred from Taungup Township to Thandwe Prison in Arakan State have tested positive for COVID-19, Thandwe Hospital Superintendent Dr. Ye Win Tun told DMG.

“The COVID-19 tests were conducted before they were sent to the prison. Now, they are taken to Taungup again after two of them tested positive for COVID-19,” Dr. Ye Win Tun said.

The six detained men have been placed in isolated police custody in Taungup Township and are being provided healthcare, said an official from the Taungup Township police station.

“We are providing medical treatment to them. They are in the police custody separately. They are in good health now,” the police officer said.

The officer added that a civil society organisation came and disinfected the police cells to prevent COVID-19 from spreading.

During what is being described as a third wave of COVID-19 over recent weeks, more than 80 people have been infected in Arakan State’s Sittwe, Maungdaw and Taungup townships. There have been no reported deaths to date.
