Local residents in Arakan State have complained about skyrocketing air fares as ticket prices have as much as doubled for domestic air travel.
“Air fares have shot up. Previously it only cost K50,000 to K60,000 to fly to Yangon. But now, ticket prices have increased to over K100,000. It is not OK for people like us who have to dip into their savings to pay medical bills,” said Ko Khin Maung Soe, who recently flew from Sittwe to Yangon to receive medical treatment in the commercial capital.
Another Arakan resident, Ko Teza Aung, said he had to pay even higher prices for air tickets as he had failed to book in advance.
“I needed to travel urgently from Sittwe to Yangon, and all the airline ticket agents said tickets had been sold out, and they told me to book at least one week in advance. So, I talked to airport officials directly and I was able to buy a ticket for K160,000,” he said.
Currently, Air Kanbawza, Myanmar National Airlines and Mann Yadanarpon Airlines operate routes between Arakan State and Yangon.
“We have to sell according to the prices set by airlines,” said Daw Moe Hnin Nge, owner of Sun Moon airline ticketing.
Airline operators say increased fuel prices have prompted the increase in ticket prices.
