A local woman was killed in a junta artillery assault on Taungnyo Village, part of Arakan State’s Pauktaw Township, at around 8:30 p.m. on December 27.
Daw Mya Thein Wai, 50, was killed by shrapnel while she was at her home when an artillery shell fired by a junta battalion in Sittwe fell and exploded in the village on Friday night.
“The sounds of heavy weapons were heard yesterday. A woman from Taungnyo Village was killed in a junta shelling. An artillery shell was fired by a junta battalion in Sittwe,” said a local man.
Although the Arakkha Army (AA) has seized Pauktaw Township, there are frequent heavy weapons attacks from junta battalions in Sittwe Township directed toward Pauktaw Township.
“We are concerned for our safety when we hear the sounds of heavy weapons. There is no fighting, but we are afraid because the Myanmar military is firing heavy weapons,” said a local woman in Pauktaw.
The regime has conducted airstrikes and artillery attacks on villages on the border of Arakan State’s Sittwe, Ponnagyun and Pauktaw townships in recent days due to the AA’s offensive attacks on military camps in Sittwe Township.
Regime airstrikes and shellings have caused at least 30 civilian casualties in Arakan State so far this month.
