NUG awards military honours to 1,792 resistance members

Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) awarded military honours, medals and decorations to 1,792 resistance members on September 7, marking the fifth anniversary of the People’s Defensive War against military rule.

The ceremony was the first of its kind since the establishment of the People’s Defence Force (PDF) and the launch of the armed resistance five years ago, according to an address by NUG Defence Minister Yee Mon.

Acting President Duwa Lashi La, Prime Minister Mahn Win Khaing Than and officials from the NUG, Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and National Unity Consultative Council attended the ceremony, along with representatives of federal units, allied resistance organisations and resistance forces.

Yee Mon said the awards were intended to recognise those who had demonstrated courage, leadership and commitment during the five-year resistance, including members of the PDF, People’s Defence Organisations (PDOs) and allied resistance groups.

The NUG presented five categories of military honours. The Honor of People’s Revolution (HPR) was awarded posthumously to Lieutenant-General R Khaung Lunn, who had served as commander of Military Region No. 1.

A total of 21 people received the Legend of People’s Revolution (LPR) title, which recognises battlefield courage and actions that protected fellow resistance members or contributed significantly to fighting.

Another 1,647 people received the People’s Medal for Noble Service (PMNS), including recipients recognised for losing their lives or suffering permanent physical injuries during the resistance.

The People’s Medal for Loyal Service (PMLS) was awarded to 81 people for sustained participation and distinguished service, while 42 received the Badge of Revolutionary Service (BRS).

Of the 1,792 recipients, 1,442 were PDF members, 324 were from PDOs and 26 were from allied resistance organisations. The awards covered members from 45 military regions, divisions, battalions and other units.

Yee Mon said this year’s recipients were selected primarily from nominations submitted to PDF military headquarters in time for consideration. Some eligible resistance members may have been excluded because their nominations were not received before the deadline.

Those individuals could be considered in next year’s awards, he said, adding that the NUG intends to make the military honours an annual programme.

The defence minister also paid tribute to resistance fighters and civilians who did not receive awards this year but have contributed to the movement over the past five years.

The ceremony coincided with the fifth anniversary of the People’s Defensive War, declared by the NUG on September 7, 2021, following the military’s February 2021 coup.

Yee Mon said the awards were intended to preserve the contributions of resistance members as part of the historical record and reaffirmed the NUG’s stated goals of ending military dictatorship and establishing a new federal democratic union.
