The Myanmar military will reportedly test-fire new weapons in and around the Arakan State capital Sittwe, with junta battalions also intending to showcase their military might with a parade of armoured vehicles.
"Yesterday, teachers ordered the students not to come to school because the military was going to test new weapons. That's why I asked my son not to go to school today. The new military vehicles will reportedly be test driven on the road," said a local woman in Sittwe.
The regime did not clearly inform the public that it intended to test-fire weapons, and some people only learned about it through lower-level junta staff employees.
The regime has used cargo aircraft and warships to transport junta reinforcements to Sittwe, said a source, as fighting intensifies in the township. It is accused of transporting heavy weapons by cargo ships under the pretext of delivering food for residents in Sittwe.
"New artillery supplies provided by Russia have reportedly arrived in Sittwe. Reports have been spreading since September 23 that the regime will test new weapons," said a resident of Sittwe.
Residents are concerned for their safety because it is not yet known where the regime will test-fire its weapons.
The regime has meanwhile planted landmines and naval mines near military camps and junta battalions in Sittwe and around the town, locals said.
"The regime plans to test-fire new weapons today. We are cautious of the junta weapons tests," said a local woman in Pauktaw Township.
Military and Arakkha Army (AA) forces clashed at a location between Wahbo and Minhla villages and near Amyint Kyun Village in Sittwe Township on August 29. The regime has been firing mortar shells into residential areas and tightened security in Sittwe since then.
Following the launch of an offensive in November of last year, the AA has seized 10 townships in Arakan State and Paletwa Township in neighbouring Chin State. Clashes between the military and AA are reportedly escalating in Arakan State's Maungdaw, Ann and Gwa townships.
