U Than Tun, a member of the Arakan State Administration Council, told DMG that dredging would be carried out to improve the flow of the Myolae Creek in the state capital Sittwe.
He said the dredging would first clear the areas around 11 bridges along the creek, also known as Kalar Chaung, before proceeding to the mouth of the creek.
“The dredging of the Myolae Creek began on May 12. All the rubbish will be excavated from under the bridges along the creek with the use of heavy machinery. Then we will continue to dig the mouth of the creek to improve the flow of water,” he explained.
The Myolae Creek winds through the centre of Sittwe and downtown areas are often flooded during the rainy season due to poor drainage, said U Maung Thar Sein, a Sittwe town elder.
He said that if the dredging of the Myolae Creek is to improve the flow of water, it should be done in a thorough and systematic manner.
“Earlier, it was said that the creek would be re-excavated, but it was not known where the funds went. So, if this creek is re-excavated this time, I would like to see water from downtown areas flow systematically into the river,” he said.
The Myolae Creek flows through several of Sittwe’s wards and is currently filled with rubbish and silt.
