Kyun Nanthar, an island 24 nautical miles west of Kyeintali Town in Arakan State’s Gwa Township, has been designated as a marine national park, becoming the third island to be designated as such in Myanmar, and the second in Arakan State.
The junta-led Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation declared Kyun Nanthar as a marine national park on June 12, citing authority under Section 9 of the 2018 Conservation of Biodiversity and Protected Areas Law.
The Kyun Nanthar national marine park covers 23,000 acres including 781 acres of land and 22,219 acres of water. It has an active mud volcano in the centre.
The island and its surrounding waters are home to marine species protected by the International Union for Conservation of Nature such as green sea turtles, olive ridleys, big-headed turtles, leatherback sea turtles, loggerhead turtles, whales, whale sharks, dugongs, sharks, rays and Pacific reef herons.
Lanpi Island in Bokepyin Township, Tanintharyi Region, was the first marine national park to be designated in Myanmar. Nanthar Island, located between Sittwe and Rathedaung townships in Arakan State, was designated as a marine national park in 2022.
