The Daung Chaung village-tract administrator’s office in Gwa Township, Arakan State, was set on fire earlier this week, according to a clerk from the office.
Ko Soe Oo, the Daung Chaung village-tract clerk, said the office was set on fire at about 8 p.m. on June 21 and sustained minor damage.
“The office was doused with petrol and set on fire deliberately. We don’t know who did it. Only a few wood planks were damaged as villagers helped put out the fire,” he said.
An investigation has been opened but no suspects have yet been arrested in connection with the case.
Ko Soe Oo said he and his colleagues are concerned about their safety in the aftermath of the arson attack.
“We, government staff, are worried as we have been targeted by the attackers. I don’t want to accuse any group regarding the case; however, it is necessary that the culprits be arrested quickly. We need security,” he said.
DMG phoned the head of the Gwa Township police station seeking comment on the incident, but he did not respond to the call.
Daung Chaung village, where the administrator’s office was set on fire, is located about 7 miles from Gwa town.
