A gallon of fuel oil sold for K10,000 on the morning of September 29 in Manaung Township, Arakan State, according to petrol dealers.

A barrel of fuel oil has reportedly increased in price from about K300,000 previously to K450,000 on Wednesday morning, resulting in a gallon of fuel oil selling at K10,000, said U Nyi Gyi, owner of a fuel oil shop in Manaung Township.

“The price of fuel oil at all filling stations in the township today is K10,000 a gallon because of the expenditure for transporting,” he told DMG.

A liter of Octane was K1,570, 95 RON was K1,635 and diesel was K1,555 in Taungup Township as of noon on September 29, slightly higher numbers than the day prior, said Ma Pyone from DENKO filling station in Taungup.

“The price of fuel oil continues rising. It is difficult to predict the situation because the price is more volatile,” she said.

The Ministry of Commerce has said it is working with the Myanmar Fuel Oil Importers and Distributors Association to sell fuel oil directly at the reference exchange rate of the Central Bank of Myanmar from September 22 so that people can buy fuel oil at a fair price.

The ministry has announced that people can buy a litre of fuel for about K1,200 at Kyaw Zan and Lin Mu Taung filling stations in the Arakan State townships of Gwa, Thandwe, Taungup, Ann and Sittwe.

On September 26, the Ministry of Commerce announced a list of filling stations where people could buy fuel oil at a fair price in Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw, including the price, in state-owned newspaper Myanma Alinn.

The public can complain if they are not able to buy fuel oil at the fixed price, it said.

U Naing Oo, an official of a working committee on ensuring the smooth flow of trade and goods, told DMG that there have not been any complaints about overcharging so far.

“We’ve provided the contact number to file a complaint. If there is a complaint, we will solve the case by connecting with the relevant committees and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs,” he said.

At press time, the Kyaw Zan filling station in Arakan State was selling fuel oil at the fixed rate announced by the Ministry of Commerce.
