Myanmar's military regime, which has lost about 100 towns to resistance forces, is using all its might to retake control of those areas, with some success.
The regime is reinforcing its forces in northern Shan and Kachin states, and Mandalay, Sagaing, and Ayeyarwady regions bordering Arakan State, and is also fiercely resisting attacks by anti-junta forces in other areas where fighting is intense.
The military regime has now retaken Mobye in southern Shan State, Nawnghkio in northern Shan State and Thabeikkyin in Mandalay, and is attempting to restore its administrative machinery there.
Military and political analysts say the regime is desperately trying to recapture lost territory through military operations, possibly in preparation for upcoming elections.
"The military regime is trying to retake the territories lost to the revolutionary forces in order to hold the elections. The military regime will hold elections in as many cities as possible. The main goal of the military regime is to militarily dominate the revolutionary forces," said U Kyee Myint, a political analyst.
The Myanmar military has sent at least 25 warships to Sagaing and upper Mandalay regions via Gaw Wein Jetty in Mandalay since July 17, sending reinforcements by river route.
The military regime has also reportedly sent more than 500 troops from Myitkyina to Hpakant in Kachin State and is conducting offensives in and around Hpakant.
Military analysts believe a regime flotilla of five boats and seven cargo vessels carrying weapons and reinforcements is heading to Tagaung, Htigyaing, Katha and Shwegu townships in Sagaing Region and is also planning to transport materials to Bhamo, where fighting with the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) is raging.
"The military regime is planning to intensify its attacks in various areas. Even if the revolutionary forces cannot go out and fight, we need to be prepared in case the military regime attacks," said Zin Yaw, a captain of the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).
The junta's ability to launch a counteroffensive to retake lost territories is believed to involve political pressure, military equipment, and technical assistance from China.
According to a report released on July 16 by the Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M), the Chinese state-owned China South Industries Group Corporation and two subsidiaries play key roles in the production process, including raw materials, technology, and experts, to manufacture aircraft bombs at the regime's military-owned No. 21 weapons factory in Seikphyu Township, Magway Region.
Three warships from the Southwest Command and Pathein Naval Base, meanwhile, arrived at Laymyethna along the Pathein River in the second week of July, carrying tanks and military equipment.
"These days, we see the military regime reinforcing its forces in various places. The only places where the military regime cannot effectively reinforce its forces are the border outposts in Kayin (Karen) State," said Captain Zin Yaw.
Military boosters are spreading propaganda that the regime will recapture each township it has lost, hoping to boost morale among the pro-junta crowd after the military recaptured Mobye and Nawnghkio.
Since the launch of Operation 1027 toward the end of 2023, which began in northern Shan State, as of April 9, 2025, ethnic armed groups and other anti-regime forces had occupied and controlled 97 towns across the country, according to BNI-Myanmar Peace Monitor.
The regime recruits nearly 5,000 young people for each military training batch and is believed to have conscripted around 70,000 men since activating the Conscription Law in February 2024.
Junta soldiers who surrendered to the revolutionary forces have said that the regime has sent many conscripts to the front lines. The military regime's roster of recaptured towns includes Kawlin, Kani, Lashio, Hsihseng, Myawaddy, Mobye, Nawnghkio and Thabeikkyin.
