A 100-household head in Kanpyin (Muslim) Village in Arakan State’s Buthidaung Township was shot dead by a group of masked men at about 8 p.m. on October 6, according to a village administrator.
U Sarli Harmouk, the 40-year-old village official, was shot dead by three masked men, said U Zawmi Hussein, an administrator of neighbouring Phoe Khaung Chaung (Muslim) Village.
“Yesterday, three men covered their faces with masks and called him from the front of his home. Three masked men killed him [the 100-household head] with a pistol as he didn’t come out of the home. He received a gunshot wound to his left chest and was pronounced dead on the scene,” the village administrator told DMG.
The body of U Sarli Harmouk was buried at the Kanpyin cemetery on Friday.
“Yes, the news is true that he was killed. As far as we know, he was assassinated by gunmen from ARSA,” said Buthidaung Township administrator U Kyan Aye, referring to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.
U Sarli Harmouk succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack, the township administrator added.
Administrators from nearby villages said they are worried about their safety after the Kanpyin Village official was shot dead.
“We are concerned for our safety and feel unsafe. We dare not go outside our home for fear of being shot and killed,” said U Zawmi Hussein.
