Around 40 locals from Taungup Township, Arakan State, were reportedly arrested by junta soldiers while attempting to flee ongoing fighting between the regime and Arakkha Army (AA) via a forest road to mainland Myanmar.

They were arrested on their way to Oke Shit Pin Town in Padaung Township, Bago Region, and their whereabouts remain unknown.

“Dozens of residents in Arakan State were arrested by a junta column near the Arakan Mountain Range,” said a source.

“We are trying to contact the detainees. Two groups were heading to Pyay and one of the groups was arrested by the junta. Another group has safely arrived in Pyay,” said a source close to the detainees.

Fighting between the military and the AA in Taungup has forced residents to flee the town on foot across the Arakan Mountain Range to mainland Myanmar.

Locals fleeing to mainland Myanmar are often arrested by the regime, and some have died en route from exhaustion, illness or a combination of the two.

An elderly woman from Theintaing Ward in Taungup died of suffocation in the Arakan Mountains while fleeing the war in Arakan State on November 8.

Clashes between the military and AA have been reported near the No. 5 Military Operations Command, and Light Infantry Battalion Nos. 346 and 544 in recent days as the ethnic armed group attacked military camps in the area.
