Three local men were reportedly taken from their homes in downtown Kyaukphyu wards, Arakan State, by the Myanmar military on September 7.

The arrestees have been identified as Ko Win Naing, 29, from Ceditaung Ward, Salai Ko Aye aka Kahi, 43, from Asoeya Ward and U Ba Than, a 42-year-old man from Paikseik Ward.

The three men were abducted by junta soldiers from the military’s Kyaukphyu-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 34 for questioning, locals said.

“He [Salai Ko Aye] is like our family member. He was taken by the military for questioning. He has no links with any political organisations,” said a source close to Salai Ko Aye.

Salai Ko Aye has three family members and he is the youngest son in his family. His mother was also traumatised by her son’s arrest and was bedridden, a source close to the family added.

Ko Win Naing, a resident of Ceditaung Ward, was also arrested by the military and he has not been released yet, said U Than Hlaing, a ward administrator.

“I was not involved in his arrest. He was reportedly arrested for questioning and he has not been released yet,” the ward administrator said.

Security personnel from the military’s LIB No. 34 detained U Ba Than, a resident of Paikseik Ward, a resident said.

DMG attempted to contact Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun, spokesman for the regime, to seek comment on the detention of the three men in Kyaukphyu, but he could not be reached.
