A Kyauktaw resident detained by Myanmar’s military regime and charged under the Penal Code’s Section 505(b) for incitement has reportedly required hospitalisation due to high blood pressure.
U Kyaw Than Maung, 57, was sent to Kyauktaw Township Hospital on Thursday for treatment, according to a source close to the Kyauktaw Township police station.
Ko Kyaw Naing, a son of U Kyaw Than Maung, said he has been able to send medicine to his father, but is still worried about his health.
“We were told yesterday evening by the police that he had been sent to hospital, and had a medical checkup,” Ko Kyaw Naing said.
Relatives say U Kyaw Than Maung was detained because he had a photo of the Arakan Army (AA) on his cellphone.
“They said they found a photo on his phone. It is not a crime. What’s more, my father is not familiar with smartphones. I am concerned that he might be imprisoned,” said Ko Kyaw Naing.
A native of Kaung Toke village in Kyauktaw Township, U Kyaw Than Maung drives an auto-trishaw for a living. He was detained on June 21 along with activists U Zaw Win and Ko Zaw Min Htet.
Ko Zaw Win has been charged under Section 505(a), and the other two have been charged under Section 505(b), both incitement provisions. The three men have not yet been brought to trial.
