Legal Clinic Myanmar (LCM), an organisation working to promote and strengthen the rule of law, democracy and human rights in the country, opened a labour support centre in Sittwe’s Kyaung Tet Lan ward on March 18 to address labour issues in Arakan State.
Those who have lost or had their labour rights violated can file a complaint with the centre, which will help them mediate and, if necessary, open a case in court, said Daw Mra Thuzar, a centre official.
“At present, job opportunities are very scarce in Arakan State. Workers are not getting the opportunities they deserve due to the lack of job opportunities in Arakan State,” she said.
U Win Kyaing, project director for the Thazin Legal Institute, said he welcomed the opening of the labour support centre in Arakan State at a time when there are few labour advocacy organisations.
“I am very happy with the opening of a labour support centre in Arakan State. It’s a small centre that we wanted to have more than 10 years ago. I think this labour support centre can help workers in the legal sense,” said Daw Nyo Aye, chairwoman of Rakhine Women’s Network.
LCM is a nonprofit dedicated to advocating for people who lack access to human rights and justice, providing legal assistance at 13 branches across Myanmar.
