Thousands of people have been affected by flooding caused by heavy rains in Mon State’s Ye and Zin Kyaik townships, reported locals.
It has been pouring rain in some parts of Mon State since Monday. More than 9,500 people were evacuated from their homes after about 1,700 houses were inundated by torrents of rain in Ye Township’s Han Gan village, said Han Gan villager Banyar Aung Myat Thu.
“Only Han Gan village was [badly] flooded. The rain flooded some 1,700 houses out of 2,000 houses in the village. Villagers are helping each other, and no humanitarian group has reached us yet,” he said.
In other villages, some 200 locals were also affected by floods. Some remain in their flooded houses, waiting to see if the water will recede.
Meanwhile, urban wards in Zin Kyaik have also been inundated by heavy rains since Thursday night. Parts of the Yangon-Mawlamyine road were submerged, bringing traffic to a halt, said town residents.
“Some parts of the road are flooded, but some vehicles are still travelling through the water,” said a resident.
Heavy rains in Myanmar are being caused by the effects of Tropical Storm Mulan in the South China Sea, which has now weakened into a depression, meteorologists said.
Large swaths of Myanmar can continue to expect rain over the near term, according to weather reports.
