Government staff in Mrauk-U Township, Arakan State, have not received their salaries for August, according to the staff and residents.
Ma Thiri Yadana, a medical worker on the government payroll in Mrauk-U town, said she had not received a salary through September 2 and had not been told why the salaries were delayed.
“Education staff also do not get their salary for August yet. We do not know why,” she said.
Ko Arkar Soe, a resident of Mrauk-U, said government staff have not received salaries because there was not enough money for their paychecks at Myanma Economic Bank in Mrauk-U.
“Almost all government staff have not received their salary in Mrauk-U Township. I heard that the government bank in town does not have sufficient cash to pay their salaries,” he said.
DMG phoned the Mrauk-U Township administrator and Myanma Economic Bank seeking comment on the situation, but they could not be reached.
U Tun Win, a middle school teacher at Kyaukse Pyin post-primary school in Mrauk-U Township, said: “We went to Mrauk-U yesterday to take out salary but we did not get it. We were told that the money to pay the salary has not arrived yet at the bank. We do not know the exact date to get the salary.”
Arakan State lawmaker U Tun Thar Sein from Mrauk-U Township said he had heard that government staff were waiting on salaries but that he did not know the details.
