The head of Arakan State’s Kyauktaw Myoma police station, Police Captain Tun Naing Oo, was gunned down in front of the station on the evening of August 12, according to residents.
The police captain reportedly died on the spot of gunshot wounds to his head and back, said a Kyauktaw resident who declined to be named.
The police captain was shot and killed while sitting together with a subordinate colleague at a tea shop located between the police station and the office for the head of the township police force, the Kyauktaw resident said on condition of anonymity.
“As far as I know, policemen from the Myoma police station used to enjoy the tea at this teashop,” he said. “A group of unknown men came, quarreled with the police captain who was sitting together with a police sub-inspector at the tea shop, and shot the police captain twice in the head from short range.”
At least 10 gunshots were heard coming from the scene of the shooting, Kyauktaw residents said.
U Oo Tun Win, the Lower House lawmaker for Kyauktaw Township, said he had heard that the commander of Myoma police station was killed in a shooting incident on August 12.
“I heard gunfire from a location where the Myoma police station is located at about 7:30 p.m. yesterday,” the Lower House MP said on August 13. “I didn’t know exactly what had happened. I have been informed by residents that the police captain was assassinated.”
DMG contacted the Kyauktaw Myoma police station seeking comment on Wednesday’s violence, but a police sergeant there said he could not respond because he had yet to be briefed on the details of the case.
Police Inspector Aung Min Zaw from the Kyauktaw Myoma police force was stabbed to death on June 13.
And Police Major Saw Than Lwin, chief of the Kyauktaw force, was wounded in an August 2019 stabbing, while a police sergeant responsible for jetty security in the area was killed in a knife attack the following month.
