Political activists targeted in Tanintharyi Region

Arrests of political activists in Tanintharyi Region increased this month, according to sources in the region.

Junta forces raided a house in the Tanintharyi Region capital Dawei on December 29 and arrested a man, his family told DMG.

“More than 20 members arrived at his home at about 3 p.m. with a civilian car. They were seeking to forcibly enter the house. At that time, he was about to leave home. So, they handcuffed and took him, but we do not know where he was taken,” a family member said.

Ko Kyaw Naing had organised protests in the early post-coup period, but he was arrested for alleged links to the People’s Defence Force (PDF), a source familiar with his situation said.

On December 27, junta forces arrested the local chair of the National League for Democracy and two party members in Yalai village, Yebyu Township, following the killing of a military informant there.

U Tin Soe, the NLD chair in Yalai village, was detained along with party members U Nay San Lin and Ko Wai Yan Nain, residents said.

On December 25, junta forces raided a house in Dawei town and arrested a youth, following the arrest of two other youths two days earlier.

On the morning of December 24, a man was reportedly shot dead by Myanmar military personnel stationed on the road between Launglon and Sanhlan villages in Launglon Township, a resident said.

“I heard the sound of gunfire and saw a young boy was shot dead. The soldiers said they shot him because he had a gun. He was a worker on a rubber plantation. His body was taken to hospital,” the villager said.
